Six months after I first saw the Voyager deck, I returned with my saved pennies to purchase the deck. It was 1988. I read more about James Wanless, Ph.D., the creator of the deck. As I took each card and read about all the wonderful symbols, I KNEW - some dau I was going to meet him. He lived in Carmel, VA at that time and I lived in a little town of 300 in rural western Iowa. Chances were slim. But dream big folks! I set my intention and began to study more and more about the deck. I started reading for myself for about six months. Although it was a non traditional deck, the pictures seemed to start a movie in my head and a story began. I gathered courage and offered to do a reading for a friend. Mind you, that first reading was done with book in hand and I just read what the text told me. I decided to use a mandala spread instead of Celtic Cross. I was involved in a women's group at the time exploring spirituality so circles seemed appropriate. I slowly began to understand the meanings of the cards without the book and started to share those stories in my head. Self confidence was very low. I was going through a divorce after 20 years of marriage and had returned to college to get my Masters. Things were stretched financially and emotionally. But my dream was intact. In the early 1990's, I decided to move to Florida to get treatment for an eating disorder. I entered a specialized half way house in Miami. Now working, my life had more order and finances. One day, I opened the Miami Herald and there was a full page ad for a New Life Expo downtown in a few days. Oh, fun! As I read through the events....there it was...Dr. James Wanless was leading a workshop. I asked for the day off and prepared to experience a dream come true. I was so excited. I went. Found the room and planted myself on the front row.
There he was, just like his picture I had been staring at for over 5 years. It was wonderful, fun, educational and my excitement built. After he finished speaking, I gathered courage and walked up to him to say thank you and tell him my journey to meet him. Dream come true, right? Oh, it gets better...he smiled and said, "I need some help in my booth. Come and read for me there." I thought he didn't understand. I was using the book still. He smiled and told me to put the book away and just tell the story in my head and then he asked me to give him a 3 card reading! I did! Next week I will tell you the rest of the story. It just gets better!
